Hello Melissa! I love your article and came here via Vin's recommendation!

I agree that emotional and mental state has all to do for physical health. Prescription meds - most of them - do not help. People should start looking closely at what they are eating, instead of relying on questionable prescription meds, 51% of them are placed on shelves before the FDA even approves them.

Hi Melissa,

I'm shocked by these numbers too! I think part of the problem is how easy it is to get prescriptions for anxiety or depression medication. I was at a wedding a few years ago where the bridesmaids were passing around Xanax like it was candy. Frightening! I think it's unrealistic to think that the large number of people taking psychiatric medications all have mental disorders that can't be overcome with better habits.

Anyone who relies on psychiatric medications owes it to themselves to read The Mood Cure by Julia Ross which is an excellent book that explains how to overcome many emotional problems through diet. In short, eat enough quality protein to provide the amino acid precursors to many of the important neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, and avoid the foods like sugar and refined grains that contribute to the depletion of these neurotransmitters.
