Well this morning there is a story published through Reuters titled “Menopausal Women Often Use Alternative Therapies” and I really feel like I need to comment on this story.

As a Naturopath, we see many women going through the discomforts of hormone imbalance…even before hitting the dreaded “menopause”.  Personally, I have suffered with many different horomonal ailments over the years, and although have found much relief utilizing natural health and alternative therapies, I am still working to get in perfect balance.

It’s important that women know that there are alternatives to the typical conventional medical approach (usually synthetic hormones or Birth Control Pills) which are ripe with side effects and risks.   As the study mentions in the report, there are many natural health approaches to menopause symptoms: relaxation and meditation, herbal therapies, massage, homeopathy, soy products, etc.   The article did not mention one other thing that is now becoming more and more popular:  Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.

This is a topic that, depending on who you ask, you might get two different responses.  I have done some research and so far….I like what I see.  Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement therapies are compounded plant extracts that are designed or “compounded” just for you depending on your unique symptoms and circumstances.  Normally, you would just get a “cookie-cutter pill” or “one-size-fits-all” hormone pill.  And that pill would be synthetically made and not natural for the body.  Chemicals introduced into the human body do come with consequences and are not natural for us to consume.  Bio-Identicals are natural and our body is capable of absorbing and utilizing them much more approriately.

Today, I have an appointment with a progressive MD who specializes in recommending Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.  From my understanding, he has been doing this work for 13 years and is quite skilled.  So I will comment more on this later after I have more information.
