Mental Illness: Learning to Be Healthy, The Natural Way

Mental illness 1You hear so much in the mainstream media, particularly among those covering health issues, about an epidemic of fill-in-the-blank this or a war against fill-in-the-blank that. Conventional medicine is so focused on eradicating disease, we celebrate the latest incremental “cure” for anything at the drop of a hat without looking at the entire picture.

In other words, we’re concentrating on the wrong things all too often that we ignore the real problems that truly harm our health. Unfortunately, it’s that forest vs. the trees thinking that’s dulled our ability to recognize real health problems and take deliberate, safer steps to treat them.

Traditional medicine concentrates so much on curing EVERYONE that our doctors, our scientists, our society forget that we’re all a little different. Not all “cures” that promise to eliminate fill-in-the-blank this work for EVERYONE.

More Harm Than Good

What’s more, these miracle “cures” can often do more harm to your body than good. In the process of eliminating one predicament, let’s say depression, we create brand new problems, exposing our bodies to potentially harmful drugs or treatments that do our bodies far more harm than good.

For example, we take an anti-depressant in good conscience from a trusted medical professional, believing it will “cure” our emotional problems, without a concern that taking a drug like fluoxetine, better known as Prozac, has all kinds of unplanned, unexpected side effects associated with it.

Review a laundry list of side effects from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and you’ll learn fluoxetine has a number that seem to have the opposite effect of treating emotions. For example:

  • Nervousness
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • A diminished sexual drive
  • Seizures
  • Fever
  • Confusion
  • A faster-than-normal or irregular heartbeat

A while back, I talked about the countless number of clients I’ve met who have been addicted to prescription drugs. Out of all of them, an addiction to antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications, in my opinion, is the worst kind of dependency anyone could have. After reading that previous list of non-perks associated with taking fluoxetene, you understand why I feel this way.

Taking an antidepressant masks the real problem — How do you feel? — in a numbing kind of way. People lose so much touch with their inner selves that they forget how to express emotions of any kind, much less in safe, constructive ways.

Or, even worse, they become afraid to feel anything, which is why dealing with emotions with the help of a variety of natural healing modalities, and not drugs, is the safest and best way to go. It’s certainly not the easiest or most convenient option, compared to taking a pill, and you’ll need lots of help and support to break this addiction. But most people can do this.

That Numbing Feeling

But first things first. If you’re ready to make a profound change, your first step is visiting your primary physician to discuss how they can wean you off antidepressants and/or anti-anxiety meds slowly and safely.

Mental illness 2After that, you’ll want to find a qualified natural health practitioner who can help you make the transition away from prescription drugs and toward better nutrition. Lastly, you’ll need to find a mental health professional in your area you can trust to come to grips with these feelings.

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired, and being anxious and numb to life in general? My practice provides many affordable natural health services that can help you make this transition, safely.

One out of four adults — roughly 58 million Americans — experience a problem that affects their mental health every year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). What’s more, 10 percent of our children are living with a serious mental or emotional problem.
